How much do the popular cultures of the different countries of the world have in common? Petya Ilieva combines traditional motifs of Italian and Bulgarian folklore in an art exhibition in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy that will travel through the city of Sofia for a whole year

“Culture is the most reliable means for diplomacy”, this is the slogan of the initiative “Art4diplomacy” which aims to present the different cultures and nations through artifacts and to show that we all resemble each other more than we are different.

This year “Art4diplomacy” decided to dress a trolleybus with images of drawings, plots and artistic embroidery of 21 different cultures, from five continents. Why a trolleybus? To pay tribute to the city of Sofia, celebrating the 80th anniversary of the first trolleybus in the capital. But also because a painted trolleybus turns into a mobile exhibition, which can be admired daily outdoors, through the city.

Among the drawings are also presented motifs of Italian folklore, which are close to the motifs of Bulgarian popular culture, to show how much they resemble in their diversity. In particular, Italy proposed the designs and embroidery of some traditional clothes of Sardinia, to which the artist has combined the motifs of traditional clothes of Bulgaria.

The presentation of the trolleybus took place yesterday in front of the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, with the participation of Ambassador Giuseppina Zarra and the Ambassadors of the other 20 countries involved in the project.

The artist behind the project is Dr. Petya Ilieva. “We have an exceptional closeness in feelings, in forms, in colors, over the centuries people have interacted, exchanged ideas. I would like to show that the world has always been a great common home for everyone “said Petya Ilieva during the inauguration of the project.
