An inaugural event of homage to the writer Leonardo Sciascia, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his birth, online

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonardo Sciascia, an inaugural event of homage to the writer will be organized.

The event will take place on January 28, at 3 p.m. Italian time (4 p.m. Bulgarian time) on Treccani’s Facebook page.

Earth, bread, women, mystery, justice and law: the six words of Leonardo Sciascia will inspire the inaugural event of the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of the Sicilian writer (2021-2023).

A project conceived by the Amici di Leonardo Sciascia for the Comitato Nazionale del Centenario Sciasciano and the Director General of Treccani Massimo Bray.

At 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, the writer’s figure and work will be evoked in the streaming interventions – moderated by Cristina Faloci (author and editor of RAI Radio 3) – of Joseph Farrell (Glasgow), Jhumpa Lahiri (Princeton), Ricciarda Ricorda (Venice), Paolo Squillacioti (Florence), Giuseppe Tornatore (Rome), inspired by the six keywords – shown on the portrait, chosen as effigy of the centenary, engraved in 1996 by his friend Piero Guccione – that Leonardo Sciascia indicated in 1987 to the French scholar James Dauphiné as the most significant ones for his life: earth, bread, women, mystery, justice, right.

Greetings from the host of the digital event, Massimo Bray (Treccani General Director), will be followed by speeches from: Dario Franceschini (Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism), Marina Sereni (Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation), Riccardo Nencini (President of the Cultural Commission of the Senate), Emma Bonino (President of the National Committee Centenary Sciasciano, and member of the Senate), Francesco Izzo (President Amici di Leonardo Sciascia).
