On 25th March 2017, Europe will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, one of the most remarkable historical moments of the integration process in the European history. According to Sandro Gozi, State Secretary for European Policies and Affairs, such anniversary should not only be considered as a celebration, but rather as an opportunity to relaunch the European political process.
The inter-ministerial working group
The Italian Department for European Policies, in coordination with Italian and European institutions, promotes a series of initiatives aiming at encouraging debate and providing food for thought on the future of the European project, especially for the young generations.
To this end, the inter-ministerial Committee for European affairs has set up a working group coordinated by the Department, which has been meeting on a regular basis since 17th February 2016, and defined a timetable for the initiatives.
The first Italian initiative and the logo
The first Italian event of the initiatives for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome was the meeting “From Rome to Lisbon and beyond – Building a new political community”, which was held on 11th April 2016 at the Chamber of Deputies.
The official logo for the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, as well as the hashtag for initiatives #Roma2017 were presented on 31st May.
“Relaunching the European project”
Sandro Gozi underscored the relevance of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, “which will enable us to renew our commitment for a better Union, by involving those countries willing to safeguard and relaunch the European project. This message should be addressed especially to young generations, with the purpose of restoring their hope for the future”.
