Video produced by EU Ambassadors in Sofia to celebrate Europe Day

On the occasion of Europe Day on 9 May 2020 the Ambassadors of EU Member States accredited to Bulgaria have produced a special video to send a joint message to the people of Bulgaria.
At a time when the whole world is confronted with the biggest challenge since World War II, the common message underlines the essence of the European Union, our union: peace, freedom and solidarity.
The video, which begins with words by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Ekaterina Zaharieva, will be published on the social media of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and of the EU Embassies in Sofia on Saturday, 9 May at 10 a.m.

Background: Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman declaration’. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed less than a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
